Ice Cream (Dough) and Sprinkles (Colored Rice)

This was probably one of our favorite things ever and it had the added benefit of being two sensory activities in one.  I was extremely hesitant of the "ice cream" when I saw the recipe and I'm sure a lot of others will also but have faith, it turns out great!!

Ice Cream Dough Recipe (Vanilla)
1 1/2 cups of corn starch
3/4 cup of unscented conditioner
Vanilla extract

Mix everything together, I would suggest purchasing a cheap conditioner(the corn starch doesn't care if you use Aveda;-) ).  We only made vanilla today and when you add the vanilla extract this dough smells good enough to eat but make sure the little ones don't!!  I plan on trying out chocolate and strawberry with them later on.

Sprinkles (Colored Rice)- a great sensory item for kiddos
1 1/2 of rice
1 tbs of vinegar
Food coloring
Add the dry rice, vinegar, and food coloring to a container and shake it till coated. (Do each color separately)  Spread the colored rice onto a cookie sheet and bake at 175 degrees for 10-15 minutes.  I made my rice for this activity the night before so I knew for sure it would be dry.  WARNING-  It is a little stinky during this process but the smell goes away by the time it's done.  I loved the idea of using the rice as sprinkles with our ice cream dough but it can be used many different ways.  Its a great tool to layer in a tote for a sensory bin.

The boys were thrilled with their scoops of ice cream and their sprinkles.  It kept the older two busy for over a hour.  Once they stopped and we started lessons, Keaton kept right on playing for another 45 minutes:-)

The dough is a really neat consistency....I found it pretty fascinating myself.  Keaton mixed in his sprinkles fairly quickly and we decided to call it birthday cake ice cream.

Of course no school day is complete without the ever watchful Balto hanging out in the background:-)

  1. We just did baking soda and conditioner to make fake snow....Kaden loved it! He is very sensory needy. This looks like too much fun. :D
