Now onto my top five oils.  For the next few weeks I am going to cover my favorite five oils.  This comes as a response to someone asking me if I could only buy one oil what would it be.  When you first begin looking into essential oils the first thing that most people focus on is price.  I understand that completely...money is tight and the oils can be expensive.  But as I share with you my top 5 I think you will be surprised at how little they cost and how long they last.  Money is a big consideration at my house so I have to find affordable oils that work for us and I have!!!

Critical Thinking Review.....Math Analogies Level 1

     This review is for Math Analogies Level 1 (which is for grades 2-3) a product from The Critical Thinking Company . This company offers over 150 different products covering all grades and subjects and I have used a couple of them previously.  I love their products but Math Analogies was not a huge hit in our house.  I love the concept and think that it 100% benefits the kiddos.  I was surprised at the analogies my children struggled with and also surprised at the ones they just sailed right through.  There is no doubt that this product encourages critical thinking skills (did you see what I did there) but for our house it was just a little too dry.  I had a hard time getting the kids to do it and usually they jump at the chance to work on their computer based school.  

     On the plus side Math Analogies Level 1 is a steal at only $6.99 for the Windows download so even though the kids aren't crazy about it I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it.  If I get them to work on it a couple of hours a week then I would call it a success because it requires them to think in ways that our everyday schoolwork does not.  I believe that one of the most important parts of child development that is overlooked is teaching our children to think in a variety of ways.   This product definitely covers a different way then what kids are used to and that is always a plus.  Problem solving skills are so important in our day to day existence and The Critical Thinking Company does a great job of encouraging those skills with this product.  Most kids will probably love it mine are just picky...they need lots of animation and color to keep them engaged.  

     I used this product with my both my 1st grader (he is advance in Math) and my 2nd grader (he's right on level).  My 2nd grader typically struggles more with his school work then my first grader as a general rule but on this product he excelled.  The analogies just seemed to click with his brain (proof that he is an out of the box thinker).  My 1st grader did wonderful it just didn't come as natural to him and I don't think it had anything to do with his grade level.  He excels at his daily work and tends to get "stuck" when I present anything a little different then what he is  accustomed to.  We plan on continuing to use this product for both the boys and will continue to make future purchases from The Critical Thinking Company.

Sleepytime Play-Doh

We love play-doh at our house and make it a lot.  Recently sleep has been hard to come by for our whole family.  I never sleep but they kids seem to be picking up my bad habit.  They were much improved once I started diffusing essential oils but I had the idea to make a sleepytime play-doh.  It was a huge hit.  We use are favorite homemade play-doh recipe and added the lavender oil and some purple food coloring.  

Sleepytime Play-Doh Recipe

2 cups of plain flour

2 cup of water (with your desired food coloring)

1 tbsp of vegetable oil

1 tsp of cream of tarter

1 cup of salt

3 drops of lavender oil

Put all the ingredients in a saucepan and stir as the mixture heats up combining well.  You will be able to tell when it is ready as it will start to pull away from the sides of the pan and form a play-doh ball.  At this point I allow it cool down and then I put a drop lavender essential oil on each piece I give the kids and let them knead it into the play-doh.  When they are done store in an air tight container and it will last for months!!

There's an Oil for That....Really There Is

I'm still learning new things about essential oils everyday.  They are working so well for my family and friends that I am excited with the chance to share my new knowledge.

Lots of people have questions about how the oils work?, how to use them?, what a carrier oil is?, etc.  So hopefully this blog post will answer some of those questions.

The two graphics above do a great job showing you that there is in fact probably an oil for that and it they explain carrier oils.  I probably get the most questions regarding what a carrier oil is.  Essential oils are really potent.  They are much, much stronger then there plant counterpart so it is necessary to dilute them with a carrier oil when you use them.

The graphic above explains the difference each grade of essential oil. Not all essential oils are safe to use in the same way as other essential oils.

Do You Have Indoor Animals?? Kids?? Husbands?? This is a Must Read!!!

Today a new oil arrived, I am so impressed with Purification Essential Oil.  This oil is great at eliminating odors and in my house that is always needed!!! I have a wonderful Husband, two teenagers, three more kiddos under the age of ten, two indoor BIG dogs, and two rabbits, oh and a fish but he doesn't really smell;-)  My point is there is always something unpleasant to smell in my house so I LOVE this oil. 

1.  I mixed 10 drops and two cups of water in a spray bottle and I had a spray that made my fur babies smell wonderful!!! I hate that "dog" smell so our dogs get bathed once a week but at the end of the week they still stink.  I sprayed them with this today and it worked so well they may get to skip their weekend baths.  I'm posting pictures of my smelly friends just so everyone knows I wasn't lying about their size!!

2.  I love Febreeze....it is a staple in our house but guess what...... when you add a couple of drops of Purification to it you get SUPER Febreeze!!! It works so much better now and leaves the rooms smelling much fresher.

3.  I put it on cotton balls and stuck them in my vacuum cleaner, shoe baskets, and the teenage boy's closet.  Those musty odors are GONE...it's AMAZING!!!

4.  By simply placing a couple of drops directly on my air filter I made the clean smell circulate through the whole house!!!

Those CRAZY Little Oils…They Really Work!!

A few weeks ago a longtime friend introduced me to essential oils.  I was a little skeptical at first, I had another friend that had used them for years but I never really looked into them too deep.  After getting some samples and roll-ons I was hooked.   If you aren’t familiar with these crazy little oils do yourself a favor and get familiar!!  I’m going to do a quick rundown of some of my favorite oils and how to use them.  Because there are so many oils I’m going to start with some of the more common ones.  I almost always dilute my oils; I take a drop or two of my essential oil and mix it with my carrier oil (grape seed oil, olive oil, coconut oil).  The oils I am going to tell you about do not have to be diluted but they work when they are so why not make them last!!  Peppermint is one that I dilute the least often just because it works better for my headaches when I use it neat (without diluting).  As a rule I always dilute any oils that I am using on my kiddos.  Their skin is more sensitive than mine so better safe than sorry.  If you are using oil for the first time then test it on a small area, if you have intense burning or another negative reaction then just keep reapplying carrier oil only over the area until the sensation subsides.  Do not try to rinse off with water...that will not work

First up is Peppermint.  This so far is my absolute favorite.  I suffer from pretty much all types of headaches; stress, migraine, tension, sinus.  Just inhaling a little peppermint makes me feel better.  I rub in on my head and neck to relieve headaches, on my stomach to relieve discomfort there and on my wrists because smelling it all day gives me lots more energy.  I have also heard diffusing peppermint in the mornings is a great way to boost energy but usually I just inhale it.  Have some aches and pains…try applying peppermint for something similar to icy hot.  This oil does so much and if you’re a newbie it is a must have in my opinion!!

Next we are going to cover Thieves.  Thieves tea (1 drop of thieves oil, 3 drops of lemon oil, mug of hot water, and honey to taste) has been my savior each morning.  This insane weather has my sinuses going haywire, one cup of thieves tea and within 15 minutes I can breathe again and feel much better.  I also use thieves for cleaning along with lemon oil.  You will be amazed at what some water and oil mixed in a spray bottle will clean.  It’s like having a magic eraser only better!!!

Lemon oil is a must have in my opinion because it is such a good option for cleaning and because I use it for my thieves tea.  It has a cheerful, happy smell that will make your whole house just feel clean.

The last oil that I think is a must have for a beginner is Lavender.  It is great for cuts and bruise, burns, relaxation, and sleeping.  I use lavender neat a lot also.  It’s a wonderful smelling oil, and my kiddos love it!! Two of them ask for it at bedtime every night now.
