Welcome 2021-2022 School Year

How has everyone been?  It's been forever since I've written here!!!!  Our life has experienced several changes over the last little bit!!!  David is going strong in nursing school, I started back to work, we've added new animals to our every growing zoo, etc.  The boys are growing like crazy!! Dalton is in the Navy, married to his wonderful wife, and they are living in California.  Colton is 14 starting 8th grade, Weston is almost 13 and starting 8th grade, Keaton is almost 11 and starting 5th grade, Axton is starting Kindergarten this year and will be 6 soon!!  Typing that all out made me realize how crazy it seems!!!! Where did my babies go?!

Our zoo collection currently includes; 2 dogs (we are down from three due to Balto passing away earlier this year), 2 horses, 8 snakes, 1 bearded dragon, 3 geckos, 1 anole, 2 axolotls, some hermit crabs, and a cat!!! That's right, we now own a cat!!!

Our school year is about to start off with a bang.   The older two (who still live here) are doing full time school with a local co-op, Keaton will be taking a couple of classes there as well.  Since I am loving my job ( I work at a local cake supply shop) my Mom is going to be homeschooling the younger two this year the majority of the time.  It will be a learning curve for all of us I'm sure but I think it is going to be great!!!

I will be tuning back in later with some post regarding my latest cakes and creations, homeschool activities, etc.  For now I just wanted to say hi and drop some updated pictures!!

Your Child Needs You To Be A Parent

I recently read a blog post about being a mean Mom...It was a fabulous post that really hit home with me and I think we need a lot more "mean" parents in the World.  I will be linking that blog post at the end.

I lead a local homeschool group that is around 500 families, and  I wrangle a minimum of our 5 boys daily.  Our house pretty much always has extras so typically it's more than 5.  I think that due to those few things people feel comfortable reaching out to me and asking parenting questions.  I don't mind to answer the questions at all but if you know me you know everyone might not like the answers I give;-)

The most commonly asked questions are;
1. How do you get your kids to do their schoolwork?
2. How do you get your kids to do chores?
3. How do you make your kids go to bed?
4. How do you convince your kids to spend so much time outside?

Well I get them to do that stuff because I tell them to do it.  That's right, it's that simple.  I tell them to do it.  Why?  Because I am their parent and they are children.  Children need parents, they need to be parented.  After I say that people always ask "Is it really that easy?"  Uhm no....it's never easy.  One day I can tell them to do their school and they do it with no complications, the next day I can tell them to do it and THEN I spend the remainder of the day looking over their shoulders, lecturing, and maybe even getting a little not nice to get them to finish it.  Okay sometimes it is a lot not nice ;-)  Chores actually never really cause a big issue at our house.  Each kid has a chore room, we rotate the chore rooms monthly or close to it.  They spend an average of 20-30 minutes a day doing chores and they handle it great 99% of the time.  We also have barn chores, reptile chores, and dog chores that they take in stride because they love their animals.  Bedtime is not always seamless but I have always been huge on a bedtime.  When they lay down at the end of the day that is when I get "my time", that time is important for any parent.  They go to bed when we say to and if they try to get up for endless cups of water we put a stop to it fairly quickly.  They go outside because we have always encouraged outside time.  If we feel like they've been inside too long staring at tablets we make them turn them off and go outside.  The boys spend hours outside daily:-)   Again it isn't easy and it sometimes gets ugly but as the parents we stick with it.

I fully believe children need a chance to be able to make decisions for themselves, but before you give that freedom you have to parent and teach them how to make correct decisions.  Kids don't just magically know how to do the right thing.  It's our job to show them.

My kids are constantly wanting to try new extracurricular activities, if we let them they would change every two months.  Here are my thoughts on that.  Trying new things is great and you should give them chances to do that, but don't allow them to flake out on the responsibility of the previous activity they just had to do two weeks ago.  If our kids sign up for a season of soccer and then decide three weeks in that it's not for them.  Oh well, they have to finish the season.  Why?  Because they wanted to do it, they chose and agreed to the commitment, they have a coach and teammates who are now counting on them.  If we constantly let them quit everything they start they will never find a love for anything and they will never have a change to gain skill at anything.  At the end of the season they can be done, they don't have to sign up again.

Our kids are NOT perfect, our parenting is NOT perfect but you are obligated to try your absolute best to be the best parent you can be.  If you don't, you are failing your child.  You don't have to be perfect, no one is.  One parenting style isn't going to fit every family.  But you 100% do have to parent and you 100% do have to try your best.  You had the kids...step up and do the rest.

One comment we get often is, "You guys are so lucky to have such well behaved kids."  We do have great kids, we love them dearly BUT it's not luck.  It's been several years of hard work, lots of mistakes, losing our cool, wine, cuss words, hugs, apologies, and EFFORT!!

I say all this to say I am the "mean" Mom, and I'm okay with that.  Apparently my kids are also because even though the sometimes pout when they have to do something they don't like they also shower me with hugs, and I love yous daily.  Be the "mean" Mom or Dad and be proud of it.  And when it gets hard, or you want to give up just look at those precious faces and know you're doing this for the most important reason in the World.  Your Child...and they need you to be a parent.

Now as promised... here is where you can find the blog post that inspired me to do this one... I'm a Mean Mom and I don't Care.

Life Goes By Way Too Fast

I haven't posted in awhile.  Life has just been crazy busy and time flies!!! We have been immersed in school and school activities, I have been working my Young Living business like crazy, kids have been sick, etc.  I know most everyone else feels the same.  The days just do not have enough hours in them.

Yesterday we worked hard playing catch up in school since we are behind and we are taking the next three days off for Thanksgiving.  This means from 9-2 we were completely focused in on school.  That is a long day for us!!! The kids hung in there though.

Regardless of how fast life is moving I want to encourage everyone to slow down the next couple of days and enjoy your family and friends.  From our family to yours Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Handsome boys!! They have grown so much in three years and we have added one;-)

Still Surviving School..But We Are BUSY, BUSY, BUSY!!!

Monday we start Day 22 of school.  I am already ready for Christmas break;-)  We have successfully survived two weeks at co-op and starting back piano lessons.

This year has been crazy busy, I keep hoping it calms down soon but I don't see it happening.  I won't lie with the boys moving up a grade level getting all their work done is proving to be just as challenging to me as it is them.  They are hanging in there (so am I) but they have no problem letting me know this year is HARD!! We have done some fun things so far like; going inside Norris Dam for a tour, gardening downtown with friends, etc.

We don't usually do school on Friday but they have so far played a super cute math game called math marks the spot and they have begged to do reading eggs and math seeds since they woke up so I finally caved.

We are also attending a fun field trip later this afternoon:-)  Can't wait to visit the muse for the planetarium show called "Knoxville Skies".

I hope everyone else is hanging in there and enjoying their year so far!!! I will do better about blogging...maybe...I have my hands full right now lol.

SALE- 1st Day of Summer Essential Oil Sale!!!

I am running an AMAZING first day of Summer Sale for Young Living Essential Oils. While sharing this sale with a friend earlier they asked why I would do that since it wouldn't make me any money. Well here is the deal I will still make money, earning a little extra income by selling oils is the easiest thing I have ever done BECAUSE once people use them they love them and my job is done. But let me tell you a little secret I didn't get into the oil business on purpose. I started using essential oils because my dear friend told me I would love them. She is a nurse practitioner and one of the smartest people I know so when she said to me “You have to try these oils for your family.” I knew it was something awesome!! I made my first purchase and haven't looked back. We use oils daily in our home, on ourselves, on our children, and even on our pets!!! The extra money part that just sort of happened as I started sharing the oils with friends and family (not that I am complaining at all) and now 2 years later I have decided to work the business side of the oils.

Dear Dad on Father's Day...

Father's Day is a bittersweet day for those who have Fathers no longer here. Nothing sucks as bad as losing a loved one. For me though Father's Day unlocks more then just emotions of a loss but also emotions of anger, sadness, guilt, and so many more. The relationship I had with my Father was turbulent on its best days. He was a good man in a lot of ways but in others he was not. I am not speaking ill of the dead I am simply stating a fact. He would help any and everybody any chance he got. He would give you the shirt off his back, he was always like that for as far back as I can remember. He never missed a chance to say I love you and he absolutely adored his grand-kids. But to those of us that were closest to him he had a few faults that overshadowed the good from time to time. And unfortunately for him I inherited his ability to hold a grudge. However with each passing year the grudge gets a little harder to hold onto and instead I find myself faced with sadness. Sadness that he is no longer there when I automatically pick up the phone to give him an update on the boys, sadness that since his passing he has two more grandsons he will never get to meet nor will they meet him, sadness that he isn't here to see just how much one of those grandson's favors him. I have struggle more with my Dad's death then I ever thought I would. Some things just catch us a little more off guard then we think they will and his death was one of those for me. I keep thinking about how things could be different and what I could say if he were still alive. There are just too many things to count so I am going to stick with short and sweet.

Happy Father's Day Dad!! I forgive you for everything I never was able to forgive you for when you were still here. I know you tried hard and I appreciate it. Thanks for loving us and thanks for loving the boys. You would be so proud of the kids, they are growing up to be pretty amazing!! We miss you.

Love,
Your oldest (the one who is just a little more like you then she cares to admit)
